Possums — Control & Prevention in Metro Atlanta & North Georgia
Opossums are mostly harmless wanderers — North America's only marsupial, and surprisingly good at eating ticks. But when one dens under your deck or shed, moves into the crawl space, or raids pet food nightly, it stops being charming. Possums can carry fleas and parasites into the spaces they occupy, and a startled possum near pets is a scene nobody wants.
Forsyth Exterminating removes opossums humanely with live trapping and then closes off the den sites — deck skirting gaps, open crawl space vents, sheds — so the next wandering possum keeps wandering.
Signs You Have a Possum Problem
- A slow-moving nighttime visitor on the deck or patio
- Pet food disappearing overnight
- Rustling under decks, sheds, or in the crawl space
- Droppings and shuffled insulation in crawl spaces
How We Solve It
Locate the den
We find where the possum is sheltering and confirm it's a possum, not a raccoon or skunk.
Humane trapping
Live traps remove the animal safely, in line with Georgia wildlife regulations.
Exclusion
Deck skirting, vent screens, and access gaps are sealed so the den site is retired for good.
Cleanup
Where possums have occupied crawl spaces, we remove droppings and sanitize.
Keep Them From Coming Back
- Feed pets indoors or remove bowls at dusk
- Skirt decks and porches with buried mesh
- Keep crawl space doors and vents in good repair
- Secure trash and compost containers

Possums FAQs
Are possums dangerous?
Rarely. They hiss and show their teeth, but they're overwhelmingly bluff — playing dead is the famous backup plan. The bigger issues are fleas, parasites, and the mess they make denning under structures.
Do possums carry rabies?
It's very rare — their low body temperature makes them poor rabies hosts. They're actually beneficial tick predators; we just relocate them away from your living space.
What's living under my deck — possum, skunk, or raccoon?
Tracks, droppings, and odor tell the story, and our inspection confirms it. Correct ID matters because trapping and exclusion strategies differ by animal.
