The most common tip-off is sound: scratching, scurrying, or thumping overhead, usually loudest at dawn and dusk when nocturnal animals like raccoons, rats, and flying squirrels are on the move. Grey squirrels are the exception, busiest during daylight hours.

Beyond noise, watch for droppings in the attic or garage, chewed wiring and insulation, greasy rub marks around openings, torn soffits or roof vents, and a persistent musky or ammonia-like smell.
